The Industrial Revolution
began in Britain in the late eighteenth century, bringing new sources of
power, new machinery, new industries, new methods of production, new products,
new ways of working, new means of communicating, new places to live and
work, new modes of travel. The pace of change intensified during the Victorian
period. Here we look at some of the interrelated elements that brought about
